Doesn't insulate like fabric—only reflects. Must have some clothing/body insulation underneath. Tears easily. Loud and crinkly (not stealthy). Single-use integrity; once torn, loses reflectivity.

Field notes

• Before packing, fold carefully along the existing crease. Crushing into a ball creates permanent wrinkles that weaken foil.
• In freezing temps, warm the blanket in your hands for 10 seconds before opening—cold foil is brittle and tears on deployment.
• Layer strategy: skin→clothes→mylar→bivvy→blanket on top. Each layer captures different heat mechanism (conduction, radiation, convection).

FAQ

Q: Can I reuse a torn mylar blanket? Partially. Reflectivity is compromised at tear, but you can tape it and use for ground insulation. Whole blanket reflectivity is gone, so body-wrap use fails.

Q: How much warmer do I get with this vs. without? In calm conditions, 5–10°F effective warmth gain (depends on existing insulation). In wind, the effect is negated unless wrapped tight (traps little air).

Q: Is this safe against fire? Aluminized plastic will melt and stick if exposed to direct flame. Not near fire. Use away from flames; ceramic version exists but weighs more.
