Built to last

Poly Taff material is a lightweight woven polyester composite—durable for field use but not indestructible. The material repels water well when new; over time and with UV exposure, water-repellent coatings degrade and the fabric becomes less effective. Tears in Taff can be patched with duct tape or adhesive repair tape; the material won't fray like cotton. The seams are not sealed, so water can seep through stitching if you're in heavy, sustained rain—consider a waterproof liner or emergency bag inside the poncho for electronics and documents. This is a rain layer, not a full waterproof system. In high wind, the loose fit can catch and tear if not tied down. Store dry and cool; plastic degrades in direct sunlight over years.

Field notes

• Tie the poncho around your waist with paracord or the included drawstring to keep it from catching wind. If you're moving fast or climbing, looseness becomes a liability—secure it so it moves with you, not against you.
• The seams are not waterproof. In heavy rain, water will eventually seep through stitching on your pack or legs. Expect this and plan accordingly: keep critical items in waterproof bags inside your pack, not directly under the poncho.
• After use, hang the poncho to dry completely before packing. Wet Poly Taff can develop mildew if stored damp. If mildew spots appear, wipe with dilute vinegar and let dry in the sun. UV exposure actually helps restore hydrophobic properties.

FAQ

Q: Can I use this as a tarp for shelter? Yes, but it's not a dedicated tarp. The 220×146cm size is adequate for a small lean-to or ground cover, but no grommets are built in—you'll need to tie paracord around corners or bundle it. Works, but expect water pooling in the center if it's not rigged taut.

Q: How long does it stay waterproof? New ponchos shed rain immediately. After one season of use and UV exposure, water-repellent coating degrades. After 2–3 years of outdoor storage, heavy rain may start seeping through. Reapply hydrophobic spray (like Nikwax) to refresh water resistance.

Q: Will it tear easily? Poly Taff is durable for field use. Sharp brush or thorns can puncture it, but normal wear from hiking and weather won't. If a tear occurs, duct tape or waterproof patch tape repairs it field-ready. Seams are the weak point, not the fabric itself.
