Camp Hatchet

A classic steel-head hatchet with a wooden handle. It splits kindling and drives stakes, and it's small enough to ride on a pack.

When it matters

• Power's out and the stove is wood: split dry logs down to kindling so the fire actually catches.
• Camp with daylight running out: cut tarp stakes, split kindling and clear small brush with one tool.

Built to last

High-carbon steel head on a wooden handle. High-carbon steel takes and keeps a sharper edge than stainless, but it rusts if you put it away wet, so wipe it dry and oil it now and then. It's a compact hatchet (about 25cm), made for kindling and small wood, not for felling trees or splitting big rounds.

Field notes

• No sheath comes with it. Wrap the head or add a leather sheath before it goes in a pack, so it doesn't cut the fabric or your hands.
• Check that the head is tight on the handle before every use. Stop using it if the head moves.
• Swing into wood only. Rocks and metal chip the edge.
• Wipe it dry after wet use and put a light coat of oil on the head to keep rust off.
• Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

Q: Will it split firewood rounds? Small, dry pieces, yes. For big rounds, use a full-size splitting axe. This is a hatchet for kindling and small wood.

Q: Does it come sharp? It ships with a working edge. A few passes with a file or sharpening stone will make it keener, and high-carbon steel holds that edge well.

Q: Is there a sheath? No. Only the hatchet is in the box, so plan a cover before you pack it.
