When it matters

• Bug-out fire without fuel on hand: found dry wood and bark, but no lighter, matches wet from river crossing. Ferro rod scrapes, ignites bark and tinder.
• Extended evacuation with multiple fires: lighters burn out; one rod outlasts a pocketful of lighters.
• Wildfire zone evacuation in wind: liquid fuel (lighter) spreads fire; ferro rod creates tight spark shower, more control in gusts.

• Lighting portable gas stove when power is out and electric ignition dead
• Backup to waterproof matches (one is mechanical, one is redundancy)

Built to last

Requires tinder and kindling prep; won't light wet wood or large logs directly. Takes practice—incorrect angle produces weak sparks. Every strike shaves metal off the rod, so it is a consumable, just a slow one.

Field notes

• Before use, scrape away the black coating on rod surface—it's oxidation and blocks sparks. First scrape is heavy and dark; subsequent strikes are bright and hot.
• Hold striker at 45-degree angle and push away from body (spark spray) over tinder bundle. Downward angle reduces sparks; horizontal is best.
• In cold temps below 0°C, rod still works but strikes are slower. Warm the rod in your hand first and prepare tinder in advance.

FAQ

Q: How many times can I actually use it? Thousands, depending on how hard you scrape. Heavy scraping and wet conditions wear it faster. Conserve it—don't test repeatedly.

Q: Can it light a cigarette or cloth directly? Very difficult—spark is hot but brief. Cloth smolders weakly. You need prepared tinder (lint, bark dust, char cloth).

Q: Does it work in rain? Yes, the spark is dry. But your tinder must be dry and your hands steady—wind makes sparks disperse before reaching tinder bundle.
