• Landmark navigation: identify peaks, road junctions, or water crossings on a map. Compass bearing to a landmark tells you direction; declination adjustment confirms you're on course.
• Team navigation: multiple people with compasses confirm bearings independently. One compass failure doesn't stop the group.

What it does

• Magnetic needle aligns to north (magnetic north, which varies by location and year).
• Baseplate compass: metal plate with degree markings allows you to set bearing to a map landmark or destination.
• NOT a lensatic compass: simpler baseplate design eliminates sighting mirrors and prismatic optics (trade-off: less precise sighting but simpler operation).
• Fully mechanical: no battery, no calibration required. Needle responds to Earth's magnetic field indefinitely.
• Non-obvious: tells true north only if you adjust for magnetic declination. Without this correction, you'll walk consistently off-course by 10–20 degrees.

Built to last

Magnetic needle housed in sealed chamber—fluid can leak over decades if the seal fails. If the needle sticks or doesn't respond to turning, the chamber is compromised. Metal casing withstands impact better than plastic. Baseplate markings fade over time with exposure to sun; carry a waterproof map copy for long navigation. Compass is NOT waterproof—store dry and protect from water immersion.

Field notes

• Before departure, look up magnetic declination for your region (USGS has detailed maps). Write it on your map margin in waterproof ink: east/west and degree value.
• Adjust bearing by declination BEFORE setting course. If declination is 15 degrees east, subtract 15 from your map bearing before turning to the compass number.
• Use landmarks 200+ meters ahead to navigate: point compass at the landmark, follow, repeat. Constant small adjustments correct drift better than trusting the compass to the horizon.
